Data & Dashboard Work
Sales & Profitability – From Analysis to Decision
Sales and profitability data was available, but decisions were not clearly defined. Discounting patterns, margin pressures, and loss-making categories existed, yet there was no structured way to translate insights into action.
Step 1 — Understanding the Problem
The initial step focused on analyzing sales, profit, and discount patterns across categories. This provided visibility into key issues such as low margins, high discounting, and loss-making segments.
While this view highlighted the problem areas, it did not define what actions should be taken or when.

Step 2 — Structuring for Decisions
To move beyond analysis, the data was structured into a decision-oriented model by defining KPIs, thresholds, and triggers. This enabled identification of when action was required and what decisions needed to be made.
Decision Logic
The dashboard is built on a structured decision framework:
- Decisions: Margin improvement and discount control
- KPIs: Profit Margin %, Category Profit, Discount %
- Thresholds: Profit Margin < 15%, Discount > 20%, Profit < 0
These elements are used to identify when action is required and to guide decision-making.
Step 3 — Enabling Action
A Power BI dashboard was developed to operationalize this approach. It integrates KPIs, highlights threshold breaches, and provides clear visibility into areas requiring intervention.
This ensures that insights are not only visible but actionable.

Decisions Enabled
- Adjust discount levels for low-margin categories
- Identify and address loss-making categories through pricing or cost adjustments
- Control excessive discounting to protect margins
